Participants Dancing at In Flight's 17th Annual Holiday Formal

17th Annual Holiday Formal Sets New Record

In Flight, Inc., a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, hosted its highly anticipated 17th Annual Holiday Formal at the Grandview. The event, held on December 17, saw an overwhelming response with over 500 tickets purchased.

Groups from six local residential agencies, community members, and those living at home with family, partook in the festivities. Additionally, there was a mix of familiar faces and newcomers from state-run houses and the local community.

The History Behind the Annual Holiday Formal

The Annual Holiday Formal was created as a positive opportunity to offer the community of local people with disabilities, their family, and their staff/provider agencies a chance to come together and celebrate in an inclusive and accessible space. People with disabilities are often not invited or cannot attend large events like the Holiday Formal. This is due to various barriers such as accessibility, transportation, staffing, and many more.

In 2005, to combat the inaccessibility for people with disabilities, The Holiday Formal was created by Jennifer Wells, Director of Day and Community Programs for In Flight, Inc. Inspired by New York States holiday dance in Fishkill, NY, Wells decided to host her own party after the State could not continue theirs. Starting as a small dance for 40 people in a local restaurant, Wells grew this event while growing her professional repertoire – bring it to other agencies in the area and expanding the reach to as many people with disabilities in the Hudson Valley as possible. The largest event before this years reached over 450 people in 2019. Nevertheless, In 2018, Wells began working at In Flight, Inc. and brought the Annual Holiday Formal with her.

Sponsors Secure Holiday Formal Success Amid Rising Costs

Event sponsors played a crucial role in ensuring the success of the Holiday Formal. Thank you KeyBank, Bob’s Discount Furniture, Rhinebeck Bank, Salisbury Bank, and Paraco Gas. Their support not only covered the DJ expenses but also allowed the organization to maintain affordable ticket prices for attendees. Looking ahead to 2024, the organizers anticipate a modest increase in ticket prices to offset growing costs.

Unforgettable Moments and Joyful Atmosphere

The Grandview went above and beyond to accommodate the expanding event. As a delightful surprise, an additional dance floor was added to cater to the group’s love for dancing. Donnie Lewis of Your Event Matters was an amazing DJ for the party. In fact, spontaneous conga lines circled the room, showcasing the infectious joy of the occasion.

“The magic of the Holiday Formal returned for 2023. The atmosphere was filled with music, smiles, laughter, and friendship,” shared Jennifer Wells, reflecting on the evening. “‘Dressed to impress’ did not disappoint, and the joy across the room brought the true spirit of the holidays to everyone who attended.”
