Meet In Flight’s Ulster Tigers: Mike AKA”Shooter”

Mike’s story is a powerful example of how In Flight’s Ulster Tigers, the organization’s Special Olympics program, can change lives both on and off the court.

Mike’s Love For The Game

Before basketball, Mike mostly kept to himself and enjoyed spending time in his room playing video games. While he was always kind and thoughtful, he tended to stay in his comfort zone and had limited social connections. That began to change when Mike and Coach Adam discovered they shared a love of basketball and both had experience playing on basketball teams. Seeing Mike’s interest and talent, Coach Adam invited him to join a group of local basketball enthusiasts at the YMCA for a friendly game.

At first, Mike attended games alongside Coach Adam, but before long, something incredible happened – Mike started going to the YMCA on his own. Through basketball, he began forming friendships and building confidence in social settings. What started as a shared hobby quickly became a source of independence, motivation, and connection.

Mike was a vital member of the team for In Flight’s Hoops 4 Inclusion on April 10th, a fundraising event where In Flight staff, individuals, and the Ulster Tigers took on members of the Saugerties community.

Mike and In Flight’s Ulster Tigers

So when the Ulster Tigers Special Olympics basketball team returned, there was no question Mike would want to be part of it. Since joining the team, Mike has continued to grow in remarkable ways. Wanting to stay healthy and in the best shape possible for basketball, Mike became more mindful of his health and wellness, even reminding Coach Ashley about appointments and routines to help him stay game-ready. Basketball gave Mike something bigger than a sport; it gave him purpose, structure, and goals to work toward.

On the court, Mike’s talent is undeniable. His incredible accuracy from beyond the arc earned him the nickname “Shooter” and coaches joke that anytime Mike has the ball, three points are coming. But what stands out even more than his athletic ability is the teammate he has become. Mike encourages others, celebrates their successes, and helps create a positive environment for everyone around him.

Off the court, Mike’s confidence and ambition continue to grow. The friendships and community connections he has made through basketball have inspired him to pursue his next goal: finding employment so he can continue meeting new people, building relationships, and expanding his independence.

Moving In Flight’s Ulster Tigers Forward

Mike’s journey shows just how life-changing In Flight’s Special Olympics sports can be. Basketball helped Mike discover confidence, friendship, independence, and ambition in ways that extend far beyond the game itself. Support for the Ulster Tiger’s Special Olympics team helps athletes like Mike continue to grow, explore new sports, and succeed both on and off the court. We hope to expand into additional sports this coming season to include Volleyball, Flag Football, and Softball.
