Victoria Montalto has grown from her role as a Direct Support Professional then Manager to her amazing role in Quality Assurance. Starting in this new position in 2022, she has been a vital to ensuring we are actively providing the upmost care to the people we support.
Why did you join In Flight?
I joined In Flight in March of 2015. I was living in Germantown, and I had left a different agency because it was no longer a good fit for me. In Flight because was local so I took a chance.
What do you do at In Flight?
In August of 2022, I started working in Quality Assurance and Compliance. I conduct audits of In Flight’s Residential and Medical Departments. I also conduct investigations of incidents that happen at the workplace. Additionally, I am responsible for maintaining the records room and assisting every department when they need information from said records.
Briefly describe a day at your position.
I enjoy days when I get to audit the medical books at the residences. I go to an IRA and read every piece of paperwork in the medical chart and if I have any questions or concerns, I make a note on my audit sheet. After the medical books are done, I may do a walk-through of the premises. All audit information is sent to the appropriate residential and medical departments and after a few days, I check to see if anyone has responded.
How did you get into this field?
I studied Music Therapy and Vocal Performance in college. I did two internships in college where I conducted music therapy sessions with children with disabilities aged four to ten in a preschool setting and adults with disabilities aged 55 and older in an assisted living setting. After college, I started working at St. Cabrini with at-risk teenage girls, using all the skills I had learned to help them just get through the day. After the shut down of St. Cabrini, I started working with adults with disabilities in an agency like In Flight.
What is your favorite part of your job?
It’s hard to choose one favorite thing about working in Quality Assurance. I enjoy attending the “Q.A. Coalition” meetings where other Quality Assurance departments from around the region get together to discuss quality assurance. It’s interesting hearing the perspectives of other agencies and the challenges they are facing. Hearing them talk about how they’ve met those challenges helps me through situations that may come up at In Flight.
How has In Flight helped you towards your professional goals?
After working in a residential setting as a Direct Support Professional for over a decade, I needed a fresh start. Auditing really appealed to me because I like writing and often over-edit myself. When I saw the job description for Quality Assurance, I thought it may be the right fit for me. I have a new career path as an auditor and investigator, and I wouldn’t have had that opportunity if I hadn’t joined In Flight.
